Pack Lighter, Go Further

Exploring Belize

Today we finally had the opportunity to explore the town where we have been living for the past week. Usually by the time we get back from rotation it is around 4:30, so we have only been able to travel short distances to make sure we are back safely before it gets too dark out. This morning we were both excited to get out and walk on this beautiful 85º and sunny day.

Our destination: the ocean!

Belize does not have any beaches where we are able to lay down and get a tan (or in my case a sunburn), but there is usually a grassy park area right next to the water.  We walked about a mile down to the ocean and saw so many great things along the way.

En route to the beach
A coconut!
All of the houses here are so colorful: lime green, coral, bright yellow, and more! There is no way you could ever be unhappy being around so many bright colors.

Since we are in the city, may locals rely on public transportation to get to and form work. Like America, Belizean's use the bus system (and the drivers here are just as reckless as the bus drivers in Staten Island). The difference, however, is that the buses here are old school buses!

At one of the corners along the way, we stopped at a local fruit stand. We have been told many times by multiple people that this is one of the best fruit stands in Belize City. The owner of the fruit stand gave us a great deal, $5 BZ, on a whole pineapple, half a watermelon, and a few sliced oranges. She said all the fruit here is "sweet like sugar" from sitting in the heat and sun. Once we got back to our hotel, we quickly enjoyed our treats and were not disappointed! This was some of the best fruit I have ever had. I ate an entire small pineapple for lunch!

Look at all the fruit!
Not only was there fruit, but tons of different vegetables as well!

The fruit was so juicy it was running down my arms

We even stopped at a local food stand to get some chicken, rice and beans for lunch but the place was quite busy and with an incoming storm we decided keep moving and try the food at a later date.

Thankfully it never rained
This place was BUSY. It must have some of the best food!

At last we finally reached our destination, the beach and the BELIZE sign. It was such a quiet, grassy area away from all the city traffic where we were able to relax for a little bit and cool down from the heat and humidity. We even saw some local boys swimming in the ocean!

A necessary stop for all tourists, the BELIZE sign
We really miss Zac who always helps us take photos
We eventually made it back to our hotel where we have spent the rest of the day relaxing on the patio, eating all of our fruit, and enjoying a Belikin. Life is good!
