(Day 2 in Belize, Day 1 without Dunkin)

Me at the Easy Inn |
I have been in Central America one day now. I have quickly come to realize that I am incredibly privileged to be able to live in an epicenter like New York City, which has access to so many luxuries. Thankfully, we have been blessed to be staying in a very safe (despite the crime in the surrounding town) and large hotel. Karilyn and I each have our own queen sized bed, a large dresser, hot water to take a shower in, and wifi that is sometimes better than what I have in my apartment in NY.

Our "home" for the next 27 days |
When we first arrived, we set out on adventure to the local grocery store down the street. We soon found out that because we arrived on New Year's Day, the country of Belize, just like the rest of the world was bringing in the 2017 new year and all of the local stores were closed. We then came to realize that today (the 2nd) is a bank holiday and for two days in a row, all the stores are closed. Thankfully we were smart enough to pack some granola bars and candy to hold us over for a few meals. While not ideal, we are making the best of the current situation (and counting down until we are able to buy some real food.)

If I'm being completely honest, I'll admit that I'm craving a Dunkin iced coffee, a good home cooked meal that doesn't come from a foil package, and the freedom to walk/drive around everywhere and feel safe. Yet, as I sit on the little patio located on the outside of the hotel and look across the street listening to all the foreign sounds of the motor bikes, stray dogs, and construction, I know that the homes and local Belizean people just feet away might not have the same comforts that I am used to. Being here makes me appreciate all that I have and all that I have access to. My goal in addition to learning from the Doctors at the clinic about rural medicine, is to try to embrace more of the local culture so I feel less like a "tourist" and instead be someone who can feel connected to this beautiful country.

A gentle reminder that while I might not have iced coffee, I do have beautiful tropical weather! |
